Class Studies at the Old Elk Creek Observatory

Experience the Thrill of Discovery!!  Our Astronomy Classes are all about discovering that "Eureka!" moment in scientific inquiry.  The fabulous Sky Island at Banner Creek Lake, just west of Holton Kansas, and just 30 miles north of Topeka,  provides optimal dark sky conditions.  The outstanding view of the night sky encourages students of all ages to explore "the heavens" with our large, 20-inch Ritchey-Chreiten telescope.

(Outer) Space ... For Rent:  The Banner Creek Observatory and Science Center offers some of America’s premier astronomy programs. It is also one of the Holton Area’s best locations for group functions and special events. Investigate space -- join in overnight astronomy studies. Reach for the stars in one of our observation programs. Reserve a spot online at any time.

Get Out of This World --
Right here in Northeast Kansas.  At our NASA/JPL- affiliated observatory we combine education with exploration for an out-of-this-world experience.

The Ultimate Learning Experience
Banner Creek Observatory and Science Center staff seeks to motivate all students and visitors to to earn advanced degrees in a wide variety of disciplines with an emphasis on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).  Parents often ask why our astronomy classes are so "life-changing" and "inspiring" to their children.   Educational research reveals several reasons:
  • A youth-centered, personal approach by the entire Banner Creek Observatory staff, treating youth as colleagues rather than children.
  •  The fellowship of student peers with common interests in science and engineering.
  •  Authentic scientific inquiry in support of NASA and JPL research programs.
  •  Realistic, practical projects involving modern research telescopes, technology, & equipment.
  •  A fun attitude toward learning, exploring ideas, and searching for answers in an unfettered, collaborative setting
